The Red and Blue Chair by Rietveld
Or how the construction of an object demonstrat es the aesthetic concepts proposed by neo-plasiticsm : orthogonal lines and primary colors.
Gerrit Rietveld was born in 1880 in the Netherlands. The son of a woodworking artisan, in 1911 he began his own furniture company while he was still a student. Finishing his education in architecture, he focused on design and in 1919 joined the movement began by P. Mondrian and T. Van Doesbour, De Stijl, which stemmed from developments made in Cubism. The Red and Blue Chair and the Rietveld-Schröder House are deemed by Utrecht to be the tangible manifestations of the ideas hailed by the group for painting, and applied by Rietveld to design and architecture.
Made of wood, like an architectural model, each element of the armchair forms a cross with the other; they are held together by wooden dowels. The colors used are the same primary colors used by P. Mondrian in his paintings: yellow, blue, red, and black.
