Paimio

The Païmio armchair is one of designer Alvar Aalto's emblematic objects.

Designed in 1931 for the de Païmio Sanatorium in Finland, it is part of the « architectural accessories », as Alto named them himself, aimed to further the architect's work as a designer.

Païmio, a revolutionary in conception and ergonomics, brings the patient the ideal position to breathe deep and take in the sunshine while in therapy.   The choice his material, wood, and the techniques to shape the chair's bends, will bring the Modern Movement new means of expression, and make the Organic a new fact in the search for modernism.
