The Walkman

On June 22, 1979, Sony launched the latest addition to its line of cassette tape recorders :   the Walkman TPS-L2.

This object, or more specifically the concept for this object, originally created to satisfy the personal wishes of Mr. Morita and Mr. Ibuka, the founders of Sony, quickly proved to be an incredible success, both technically and commercially.

Since then, the 'Walkman' phenomenon, which continues even today, has spread rapidly around the world; it has transformed how we live, how we listen to music, how we interact with each other, how we behave, and even our very identity.

In this film, we will see to what extent the first walkman has created a new kind of human, and has blazed the way for a diverse spectrum of miniature, portable, everyday devices, such as the iPod, the mp3, the cellular telephone, and others.
